We believe that Nursery should build on the valuable learning experiences that children have at home to give them a head start in their social, physical and educational development.

Research shows that children learn best when they feel happy, safe, secure and excited about what they are doing. It is our job to encourage children to explore, question, make choices, collaborate and have fun learning. These experiences will allow them to develop a love of learning, build strong friendships with their peers and learn new independent skills.

Children can start at Nelson Academy Nursery with funding (15 or 30 hours) the term after their third birthday.  However, if you would like to pay extra, your child can start as soon as they turn 3.  All of our sessions are 3 hours long and we understand that every family has different work and home commitments. Therefore, we offer a flexible approach to how these sessions are used. You can choose between morning or afternoon sessions, or a mix of full and half days.

Sessions and fees

Our timings are:

Year 1 - Banks & Goodall

Year 1 – Banks and Goodall

Welcome to Year One!

Within our Year One team, we have Miss M-B and Mrs Armstrong in Banks Class, and Miss Atkinson, Mrs Smith and Mrs Hattigan in Goodall Class.

In our Year One classrooms, we have created an inviting space for learning, including cosy reading areas, ambient lighting and an outdoor classroom space.

As we start our learning in Year One, we will build upon the children’s previous skills from Reception. In English, we will continue to develop the children’s reading and writing skills using some of our favourite stories to help us, such as Little Red Riding Hood, and Monkey Puzzle!

We will build upon the children’s previous Phonics knowledge, with a recap of the sounds learnt in Reception. We will then introduce new sounds and tricky words, and will continue our reading practise groups weekly.

We will focus on ‘place value’ in Maths this half-term, ensuring that the children have an extremely solid understanding of place value and the number system. We will be comparing, ordering and representing numbers.

In Science this term we will be learning all about animals and their needs, through reading aloud, observations and activities looking at the common characteristics and needs of animals. They will also be making the connection that animals, like plants, need food, water and space to live and grow. We will also be looking at animal classifications, including endangered and extinct animals. This means Dinosaurs!

Reading books will be given out and changed every Wednesday, so please ensure you remember to bring it back! This year, each child will have a physical book to bring home, along with their reading record. We will also visit the school library every Thursday, where children can choose a book to borrow for a week.

We also have P.E on a Wednesday, so children need to come into school in their P.E kit.

We hope your children enjoy their time in Year One and we are sure they will leave our classes knowing more, remembering more and achieving more!

Year 4 - Cromwell & Wren

Year 4 – Cromwell and Wren

Hello and welcome to Year 4: Wren and Cromwell Classes!

In Wren, our teacher is Miss. Knapp with Mrs. L Wilson as our TA.

In Cromwell, our teacher is Mrs. Sekatawa (Mrs. Sek) and our TA is Miss. Jefferies.

After the summer we will start the year recapping the basics in English and Maths then we will build and develop knowledge throughout the year. After the exciting summer reading challenges, we will build on our experiences by reading a variety of books – both for pleasure and to extend our learning through research. We will continue to have weekly library sessions and will be able to bring books home to share with our family.

During the Autumn term in History we will explore the house of Stuart, Union of the Crown and Gun Powder Plot. This will follow on from our history learning in year 3 and should be quite exciting!

In science, we will be exploring and investigating animals and classification, so if you have any related books or have been to any museums / on trips where you have seen anything exciting, please let us know.

We will definitely be getting creative through art lessons, DT and in cross-curricular ways too! Very early on in the year, we will be producing work for our annual exhibition on the theme ‘‘Hello Yellow’. We hope you will be able to visit to see our wonderful work!

Homework will be set as extension to work in class, sometimes as a message on dojo, other times as a paper exercise. We also ask that you spend 5 minutes a night on Timetable Rock Stars in preparation for the MTC later in the year (more about this when we start after the summer) and visit Spelling Shed to complete assignments each week. See if you can become a royal bee!

In Year 4, we ask that you read as often as you can with our child – a combination of reading to and listening to them is great. Please use the Reading Journals to let us know what you have read and return to school, so that books can be kept up to date and a range of texts are enjoyed. We have special reading rewards for regular reading so let us know what you have read and make recommendations for us in our reading area to get a treat!

We are very much looking forward to learning with you over the next year. Please come and see us or send us a dojo message if you have any questions or you would like to share some news from home.

The Year 4 team!

Year 5 - Hepworth & Tubman

Year 5 – Hepworth and Tubman

Welcome to Year 5 Tubman and Hepworth Classes.

Our teams are: (Harriet)Tubman Class - Mrs.Melia (teacher) and Mrs.Galley, (Barbara) Hepworth Class – Mr. Bidder (teacher) and Mrs. Tasker and Mrs Rosier.

The Year 5 team have started starting the year with an introduction to the Georgian Period: learning why the Georgians replaced the Stuarts… and why some people didn’t particularly think this was a good idea!  We are learning about the tragic lives lived by some of the royals around that period as well as why the Jacobites and the Red Coats fought and how this all came to a very sticky end at Culloden.

In English, our first unit will be a setting description based on ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’ and recapping our learning from previous year groups and then we are looking forward to writing a happier ending to the narrative poem, The Highwayman.

In Geography, we will be learning about mountains which links with our Science unit of rock formation. Lots of practical work which is great fun!

Our creative subjects also include links to our topic - Georgian artwork, understanding how Rococo artwork was not only frivolous, but also a little bit cheeky.  Mrs Melia has already tried acting out a highland charge for some drama – your turn next, Mr Bidder!

We’ll be recapping Spanish phonics and learning to talk about our families.  Hopefully, we’ll manage good accents this year and thank goodness that the Spanish spelling rules are much easier than English.

We are excited to learn recorders in music this half term. Lots of opportunities to read music as well as working on getting those squeak-free notes out.

We really hope you check in to Dojo for regular updates and keep up with Spelling Shed and TTRS. Please remember to let us know if you have any questions or ideas. We are always happy to hear from you.

Year 6 - Darwin & Fleming

Year 6 – Darwin and Fleming

Hello and welcome to Year 6!

We have two Year 6 classes which are named, Fleming and Darwin. The Fleming Class team consists of Mr Rossiter, Mrs Boyes and Mrs Barnes, while the Darwin Class team is made up of Mr Taylor and Mrs Klyn. The adults in our Year 6 classes are fiercely determined to give our pupils the perfect end to their time in primary school, ensuring outstanding progress with lots of fun along the way!

The year begins with a focus on the basics of English and Maths. The knowledge and skills developed early on will stand our children in good stead as they move onto more challenging Year 6 work. We will also read a variety of books that accompany our learning, as well as providing opportunities to relax and listen to a good story. This year we will be starting with Clockwork (by Philip Pullman) which is always a favourite of our Year 6 pupils and staff alike.

Throughout the school we look at some fascinating topics, and this year is no exception. We start by looking at the processes and life cycles of plants. This is a particularly detailed piece of scientific study that will help to prepare pupils for their science work at high school. In our history lessons, we begin with the Victorian Age before moving onto looking at both world wars and the tremendous sacrifices people made, as well as the impact these conflicts have had on today’s world.

Our geography work focuses on the the UK, where we are in relation to the rest of the world and further afield as well as a study of both North and South America. In RE, we will focus on Christianity and Islam. Our art work will also tie in nicely with our history, researching Victorian artwork and creating our own imitations. We will also be developing our understanding of Renaissance art, looking at famous pieces such as the Mona Lisa. Our language work will continue to focus on Spanish and, in PE, we will cover a variety of different team and individual sports.

As the year progresses we like to see our pupils become more competitive when participating in team events. Yes, taking part is important but we also love to see that competitive edge that will help children as they grow up and take their place in the world.

It’s going to be such a fantastic year and we are so excited to see what our latest group of Year 6 pupils can achieve.
